Taking orders on WhatsApp without an app
Published , updated
The reason online ordering fails for small shops is almost never the ordering. It is the install. A customer who has to download something to buy a pizza does not buy the pizza.
So nothing gets installed. The customer browses a menu in the browser they already have, and the finished order arrives as a message in the WhatsApp they already use.
What the customer does
- Opens your menu. It lives on your own domain, not a marketplace page.
- Adds items to a cart.
- Checks out.
- WhatsApp opens with the order already written out, addressed to your shop.
- They press send.
Step four is the part that does the work. The customer is not composing an order in a chat window and hoping they got it right. The message is built for them, with the items and quantities already in it.
What you receive
An ordinary WhatsApp message, from the customer’s own number, in the same list as every other conversation. There is no separate dashboard you have to keep open, no notification channel to learn, no new app on the counter phone.
The order is also recorded in your admin panel, so you have a record that does not depend on scrolling back through chats.
Why this suits a small shop
- You can answer like a person. Confirming, suggesting something else, or saying an item has run out all happen in the same thread, in whatever mix of Urdu and English you normally use.
- You keep the customer. The conversation is between your shop and your customer, on your own domain. No marketplace sits in the middle and no commission is taken on an order by this system.
- The number is already watched. Shops that reply to WhatsApp in minutes do not need a new habit to make this work.
What it does not do
- No online payment. None. Money is taken at the counter or on delivery.
- No order tracking page. Once the message is sent, the conversation is the tracking.
- No customer accounts or saved history. Every order starts from the menu.
- No delivery zones. One flat delivery fee per shop.
- No opening hours. The menu does not know whether you are open, so it will not tell a customer at midnight that you are closed.
That last one catches people out, so it is worth saying plainly rather than letting it be discovered at midnight.
Questions
Does the customer need to install an app to order?
A customer needs no app. The menu opens in whatever browser they already have, and the finished order opens as a prefilled message in the customer's own WhatsApp, which is an app they are already running.
How does the shop receive a WhatsApp order?
The shop receives an ordinary WhatsApp message from the customer's own number, in the same list as every other chat. Nothing new has to be opened or watched, and the order is also recorded in the shop's admin panel.
Can customers pay through the WhatsApp order?
Customers cannot pay through the order. No card processing, wallet or payment gateway exists anywhere in the system, so money is collected at the counter or on delivery exactly as it was before.
Ask about your own shop
Every shop is set up by hand, so the first step is a conversation. If this will not fit what you do, we will tell you.
